Why does an automatic watch stop?

Stopping on days you don’t wear it isn’t a fault. The story of the rotor and the mainspring.

Inside an automatic watch is a half-moon weight that turns as your wrist moves: the rotor. The rotor winds the mainspring, and the mainspring drives the watch.

When you don’t wear the watch, no new energy reaches the mainspring. Once the stored energy runs out, the watch stops. This period is called the power reserve and varies from model to model.

Restarting a stopped watch

You can restart a stopped watch by turning the crown a few times. Check the manual before setting the date: on many movements the date should not be set close to midnight.
